NCIC ORI: AK0013400
Jurisdiction: The City of Galena, Galena Air Force Base,
Pitka Airport, Galena Interior Learning Academy (GILA), nearby
portions of the Yukon River, the surrounding road system and
all areas within driving areas adjacent to the city.
RECRUITMENT: Though we currently have no vacancies, as openings arise, we review active applicant files.
Located in the remote Alaskan Interior on the Yukon River, 90 miles south of the Arctic Circle, Galena is
accessible only by air year-round, almost 300 miles midway between Nome, Anchorage, Fairbanks and Barrow.
Galena is home to a large regional airport, over 700 residents, a US Bureau of Land Management seasonal
firefighting camp, a year-round US Fish & Wildlife Office and and a public boarding high school located
at the old Galena Air Force Base site. The city has 24-hour medical care, a K-12 school, a rural University of
Alaska Fairbanks campus, two stores and two churches. It is served by several "bush" airlines and local
barge services on the Yukon River during ice-free months (May-Sept). During the summer and fall, fishermen and
hunters visit Galena from all over the world.
GPD Officers work with little, if any backup for hundreds of miles, under stressful and extreme conditions
(-55F in winter; up to 90F in summer) in unique situations such as transporting prisoners by air to
jail or answering aggressive bear calls. Winter daylight is just 5 hours, while summers have no darkness in
early summer. Galena is unlike any other community in America. If you have the right stuff,
you may be an ideal candidate for GPD!
Appplicants must meet AK Police Standards Council (APSC)requirements for appointment:
Age 21, HS diploma or GED, good health, valid liceense, no felonies, no serious misdemeanors in past
10 years (DUI, assault, crimes reflecting lack of moral turpitude) and no DV convictions or protective
orders in place. Good credit, urinalysis, psychological evaluation, medical exam, interview process and a
thorough background investigation. Military veterans must be honorably discharged and college education is preferred.
Out-of-state police and federal officers (excluding military police and corrections) or former Alaska police
officer applicants must be a graduate of an accredited US law enforcement academy in the past 10 years
and then complete Alaska Law Enforcement Training (ALET) annual "mini-academy" of 80 hours at the
DPS Academy in Sitka within one year of appointment. New recruits must have graduated the 12-week ALET
Academy in Sitka or Fairbanks within two years prior to appointment. All new officers must complete a
40-hour Field Training Officer (FTO) Program and a one year probationary employment period. EMS,
law enforcement and military experience for honorably-discharged veterans is preferred.
The city offers excellent pay, insurance, benefits and AK PERS Retirement. Uniforms and
equipment are provided, along with paid training, a take-home 4X4 patrol vehicle and flexible scheduling.
Qualified women, AK Natives, minorities and honorably discharged veterans are encouraged to apply.
The City of Galena is an EEO employer and a drug and alcohol-free, safe workplace.
Patches: Persons wanting the current full-color shoulder patch, the 1986-style patch
or the badge patch, should contact Officer Ervin thru his email at
grizz_71@yahoo.com.
The city of Galena does not sell or trade patches any longer.
The dress patch of the Galena Police Department is a full-color
representation of the land of the Galena area. The top of the
patch is adorned with the midnight sun that never fully sets in
Alaska's mid-summers. The snow-capped mountains reflect that even
in summer, cold weather is an ever-present part of life in the
Alaskan interior. The moose and calf along with the bear and cub
are the most commonly-recognized animals of the Interior.
Also shown is the Middle Yukon River Valley where Galena is
located and the mighty Yukon River, the historic lifeline of
the City. The salmon is the historic staple of the Athabascan
Native peoples who settled the area; the key game fish of the
region. The Flag of Alaska reflects the pride of being in the
heart of the Great Land, the last frontier, America's 49th State.
