Tiger Freeway completely washed out in the curve just before the FAA tower heading out of town, going towards the landfill. Ice flowing down the Yukon during breakup eroded ground under the road and caused the shoulder to collapse into the River. The remaining portion of roadway has water moving under it in a cave-like opening along the river. Remaining roadway hangs over the rushing river and could collapse at any time. This area cannot safely support weight of people or any type of vehicles or ATV's. AK DOT closed the road with barriers until an emergency access road can be put in, pending implementation of a permanent solution. The City of Galena is working to place a temporary dump site in town and will have this problem resolved very soon. DO NOT DRIVE OR WALK PAST THE BARRIERS ON TIGER FREEWAY! DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY MAY RESULT. Sudden and complete collapse of that portion of the roadway is imminent and may occur at any moment. Driving or taking persons onto this roadway portion could result in prosecution for reckless endangerment under Alaska Statutes.
