The mission of the Modesto Police Department is to provide professional police services. Together, in a partnership with our community and through the effective use of resources, we will achieve a safe and secure environment in which to live and prosper.
The Modesto Police Department is charged with maintaining law and order, and protecting life and property. The Department's activities include prevention and detection of criminal activity, apprehension of criminal offenders, recovery of property, prevention of juvenile delinquency, enforcement of laws, participation in court proceedings, protection of constitutional guarantees, assisting those who cannot care for themselves or who are in danger of physical harm, prevention of traffic accidents and the regulation of traffic flow throughout the city, and animal control within the city limits.
The Department is organized into three divisions: Support, Investigations and Operations. Each division has specialized units. Police services are provided to the community via an active area command organizational model. There are currently four areas of command, each with an office, within the City.
Community policing is the driving force behind the Department's commitment to the quality of life for our residents. This multi-faceted approach to problem-solving requires the incorporation of not only the community, but other city departments and governmental agencies. The programs funded within this budget provide effective and efficient law enforcement, in a growing and diverse community.
The objectives of the Modesto Police Department are:
- The suppression of crime in the City by enforcement of the laws of the United States, the State of California and the ordinances of the City of Modesto.
- The apprehension of those persons who break the law.
- The maintenance of safe vehicular and pedestrian traffic in the City.
- The maintenance of law enforcement systems and facilities in the City.
