The VA Police is a Federal Law Enforcement Agency and has the same authority and responsibilities
on the VA campus as other police departments have in the hundreds of jurisdictions across the country.
The VA Police is a full-service police agency with concurrent jurisdiction within the confines of the
VA campus in Des Moines. VA Police Officers' statutory arrest authority is derived from Title
38 of the United States Code Section 902. Police Officers at the VA are hired only after
passing an interview process, a complete background investigation, physical examination,
and drug screening. Each officer is required to attend and pass an eight-week course of study
at the Federal VA Law Enforcement Training Academy in North Little Rock, Arkansas, during the
first year of employment and qualify twice annually with issued firearms. In addition to a
minimum of 80-hours in-service training each year, officers also attend many specialized
training courses provided by the other federal, state, or local police agencies.
