Huron Police Department

About Us

The City of Huron comprises approximately 9 square miles and has a resident population of over 12,500. The City is also a regional hub with a service population of approximately 50,000. The City is home to the Huron Regional Airport with daily air service; Huron Regional Medical Center; Beadle County Regional Jail facility; the South Dakota State Fair and Speedway; and numerous manufacturing facilities including a large turkey plant employing over 800 persons and an ethanol plant. Many smaller manufacturing and businesses are in the city. In addition to the state fair grounds, the city has regional offices for the department of transportation, federal surplus property, fish, game and parks, two National Guard armories and a large federal building with over 400 workers. The US Postal Service operates a regional mail sorting facility in the city.

The City of Huron owns numerous parks, a convention center, recreation center, pool, several baseball, softball and soccer field complexes, three (3) golf courses in the city and the river/lake area that attract many people from outside the city. US Hwy 14 runs through the city on an east/west basis and State Hwy 37 going north/south.

The city is a center for education with the public school system having one (1) high school, one (1) middle school, and four (4) elementary schools. There are two (2) different religious based school systems in the city consisting of one (1) high school, two (2) elementary schools and two (2) pre-schools. In addition, the Huron Campus is a college campus setting where three (3) different colleges and universities hold college courses at. A second building for this campus is being renovated to accommodate the number of students attending the campus.

The police department has 25 sworn officers with 18 dedicated to patrol activities year round and one (1) that works in and around the schools during the school year and on patrol during those times schools are not in session. We operate with six (6) marked patrol vehicles and three (3) unmarked vehicles. In addition to the SRO the department has three (3) detectives, a Special Response Team (SRT) with a hostage negotiator and a code enforcement officer. The communications center provides police, fire and medical dispatch to the City of Huron, Beadle County, Hand County, Kingsbury County, Clark County and Jerauld County. It is staffed with seven full-time and one part-time communications officers.
