NEW EMERGENCY CONTACT AND ACCESS TO GPD: The outer door going into the Arctic way portion of the Galena Police Station lobby which has always been locked whenj the station is unmanned, will soon be open 24 & 7, with a heated shelter for person(s) to go into during an emergency. There will be a direct-dial phone to be installed that will only auto-dial the 24 hour police radio phone line for emergency services 24 & 7. This will be available whenever the police station is not manned. The inner door will remain locked, but persons will have a safe haven from animals and -45 degree cold in an emergency.

CITY OF GALENA: General contact information can be obtained by calling the main city hall number:(907) 656-1301. The city hall complex is located on Antoski Avenue. It houses the medical clinic, Native dental clinic emergency department, city offices and mental health. The city provides trash pickup, a public dump, water provision, police protection, sewage pumping and treatment, volunteer fire protection, EMS, electricity, an indoor public swimming pool and exercise room, a public baseball field, a public gardening tract and other regular city services, in addition to working with the Base Realignment and Closure agency (BRAC) in transferring Galena Air Force base facilities and equipment to the City of Galena.

FIRE DEPARTMENT: The Galena Volunteer Fire Department is located on Antoski Avenue next to the city hall. The chief is Joey Huhndorf. With the closing of Galena Air Force Base, the city will recieve additional firefighting apparatus from the airbase crash crew, in addition to its present trucks. The fire department number is 911.

GALENA PUBLIC SCHOOLS: Mr Jim Smith is Galena's School Superintendent, (907) 656-1205. Mr. John Billings is the Chairman of the Galena City Schools Board of Education. The Galena School System operates the Sidney Huntington School, the Galena Interior Learning Academy (GILA) boarding school and the Interior Distance Education Alaska (IDEA) home school program. www.galenaalaska.org is the official website of the Galena City schools.

GALENA CITY SCHOOLS: Sidney Huntington School is K-12 and encompases an elementary, middle and high school wing, each a separate program; all located in the Huntington tri-school complex building on Antoski Avenue (907) 656-1205. Chris Reitan is the Principal and Jon Buchanan is the Assistant Principal. The school complex, playground, public pool, public exercise room, volunteer fire department and public showers are all located together on Aantoski Avenue adjacent to the City Hall complex. The school library is also the Galena pblic library.

SCHOOL ATHLETICS: The Galena Hawks basketball team is known statewide for having an impressive record in state ranking. The boys and girls basketball teams were regional champions from 2004-2006. Other sports include skiing, cross country running, wrestling and volleyball. Boys and girls programs are offered in junior high and high school. The Galena Hawks boy's basketball team is the 2008 Alaska 2A champion team, following the conference win in Anchorage. The Galena Lady Hawks basketball team was recognized at the conference playoffs for academic achievement.

GALENA INTERIOR LEARNING ACADEMY GILA) is located on the former Galena Air Force Base site and is a public boarding school for high school students, one of only two state public school boarding schools in the State. This unique and exciting educational program continues to grow, with a projected student body of 150 for the 07-08 school, up from 100 in the 06-07 school year. Additions of 50 students per year for the next three years are projected as the school grows. Is addition to general education programs, the school offers professional certification or licensure training in aviation (pilot), culinary arts, automotive, computer technology, cosmetology and construction. Athletics include skiing, cross country and basketball. GILA serves students from throughout Alaska. The school number is (907) 656-2053. The student dorm is (907) 656-2112. INTERIOR DISTANCE LEARNING ALASKA (IDEA): Galena City Schools maintains the homeschooling program for students in remote areas or who are home schooled. Call (907) 656-1205 for more information.

MEDICAL CARE: Nollner health clinic is located in the city government complex and can be reached at (907) 656-1366. Services include routine office visits, specialty referrals, diagnostic testing, X-rays, medication orders, dental care for native residents, mental health counseling, family counseling, domestic violence counseling, emergency mental health care, substance abuse and alcohol abuse services. Emergency care are offered at the clinic in a fully-equipped emergency departments emergency room (ER). The clinic also offers general lab work and now has internet interphase with regional hospitals for lab work and soon for X-rays, allowing specialists in Fairbanks or Anchorage to review patient records from Galena. The clinic has healthcare providers, including visiting physicians, dentists, chiropractors, in addition to staff and visiting nurse practitioners and physicisn assistant. Providers make referrals for specialty concerns. The clinic also treats minor broken bones and performs suitures and wound care, well-baby care, general office visits and diabetes care, and treatment on-site for less serious injuries. The pharmacy also stocks regularly-prescribed medications. The Director Position is currently vacant. The clinic has visiting healthcare providers Dr. Shawn Devlin and Ms. Renee Blanton, Nurse Practitioner; the clinic coordinator position is currently vacant. The clinic and Galena EMS are exploring the possibility of expanding the EMS coverage to the EMT-II level, allowing EMS personnel who are qualified, to start IV fluids and to work on an expanded level of care from the current EMT-I level.

EMERGENCIES: Serious injuries or illnesses are stabilized in the ER and the patient is air evacuated to either Fairbanks Memorial Hospital or to Anchorage. The phone number listed is also the number for the on-call medical provider for after hours in cases of true medical emergencies: (907)656-1266. Guardian Air Ambulance and Warbelow's Air Ambulance are available 24 & 7 to fly critical emergencies to Fairbanks Memorial, Providence Hospital or Alaska Native Medical Center, both in Anchorage, or to Seattle Children's Hospital for serious injuries or illnesses such as neurological, cardiac, head trauma or surgery.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICE (EMS)/AMBULANCE: The Galena EMS operates a new, fully-equipped 4-wheel drive ambulance which is on-call 24 hours a day, staffed by volunteer emergency medical technicians. The EMS also has a snow machine available for off-road emergencies in winter: (907) 656-1266.

ALASKA STATE TROOPERS: The Galena AST Post is located in the former base headquarters building on the former Galena Air Force base. Emergency calls 1-800-811-0911 (statewide AST emergency number. There are two Troopers and one wildlife trooper posted in Galena and these officers provide police services to the surrounding areas in partnership with Village Public Safety Officers (VPSO's) in outlying villages. Information on hunting, fishing, boating safety, rules and regulatiosn and driver's license information can be obtained by calling this office. GALENA COURT: The Galena Magistrate is the Honorable Chris Mclain. Clerk of Court is Mrs. Pam Pitka. The Galena Courthouse is located on Tiger Freeway, next to Sweetsir's Store, 656-1322. For emergencies, an after-hours magistrate can be contacted through the on-duty police officer in Galena.

SOCIAL SERVICES: The Galena office of Alaska family services/ Office of Child Services is located in Old Town near the US Fish and Wildlife Office, (907) 656-1667.

US FISH & WILDLIFE SERVICE LAW ENFOCEMENT: The Galena Office is Headquarters for the Koyukuk Wildlife Refuge and is located adjacent to the social services building on Front Street in Old Town Galena, (907) 656-1231. Law enforcement agents protect the refuge, wildlife resources and visitors and conduct investigations into federal fish and game violations.

COLLEGE: The University of Alaska Fairbanks maintains a distance learning center in Glaena located on Antoski Avenue next to the school complex. For more information, call the UAF main number at (907) 474-7211

MEDIA: The local radio station, KIYU operates both FM and Am broadcasts. Shadow Steele is the general manager. The station is located on Tiger Freeway and is part of Alaska Public Radio. The office is (907) 656-1466. KIYU also operates a website for local news and events: www.kiyu.com

AIRPORT: The Edgar G. Pitka Sr, Airport is the former Galena Air Force Base. Air travel is the only year-round access to Galena so the airport is one of the city's most important facilities. It has flights in and out year-round. Frontier Aviation and Warbelows are local airlines. The runway can accomodate large aircraft such as C-130. US government helicopters for the Bureau of Land management and US Fish and Wildlife Service are based there, along with many private aircraft. The Galena Interior Learning Academy (GILA) operates a pilot training program there. The office can be reached at (907) 656-1236 and the airport ID code is GAL.

LOUDEN TRIBAL COUNCIL: The Louden Tribal Council represents the interests of the proud local Native residents, their families, businesses and lands. The Athabascans have inhabited the Galena and central Yukon interior region for over ten thousand years. Tribal Council members work to address the needs of the Native peoples and their concerns in the community. The Council's address is: P.O. Information on activities in the Native community, as well as general information on the people, history and culture of the Athabascan Natives can be obtained by contacting the Council Office. The tribal Council Office is located on the Yukon River waterfront on the Tiger Freeway, adjacent to Sweetsir's Store, near the Antoski intersection.

Louden Tribal Council is affiliated with the Tanana Chiefs Conference, a consortium of native Alaskan tribes that works to promote a better understanding of and the best interests of native persons, business, lands and education in the Central Yukon Region.

Louden Tribal Council broke ground last year for the new elder assisted living center for the area. The building will begin on the complex this summer and when completed, will provide assisted living to eligible elder tribal members from Galena and surrounding villages, allowing loved ones to stay in the community instead of having to move to Fairbanks or Anchorage for assisted living care.
