Greetings from Galena Alaska, the heart of the Yukon interior of America's last frontier.

We are proud of our community and our diverse beauty, a sportsman's paradise, with salmon, moose, bear and assorted other wildlife in abundance. Whether you come to browse the Internet, or if you visit our community, please learn more about our city, its people and the region. Galena is the largest first class city in the area. We are home to one of only two state public school boarding schools in the State, the Galena Interior Learning Academy (GILA) located on the former Galena Air Force Base. We also are home to a large aviation facility, Pitka Airport and area offices of several major government agencies, US Fish & Wildlife and the Bureau of Land Management/B.L.M.

B.L.M. firefighters have a base at Galena and their "smoke jumpers" stage and deploy from the Galena Aviation Center in the event of forest fires in the area.

Wildlife observation, hunting, fishing, boating and hiking are fun activities that attract tourists to our town and the B&B's in our area. The mighty Yukon River, breathtaking scenery and a friendly population makes Galena a great place to visit or live. Hiking, world-famous salmon fishing, moose hunting and dog sledding are local attractions. The mid-summer salmon run upriver brings fishermen from throughout the world. In the winter, the world-famous Iditarod dogsled race comes through every other year and the Iron Dog snow machine race is an annual attraction.

The City of Galena operates a public school system: elementary, middle and high school level, along with the G.I.L.A. School; a public health clinic; a 24-hour volunteer emergency medical service, a 24-hour volunteer fire department and other city services.
