Jurisdiction: The Police Department is comprised of 14 public safety officers
and 10 non sworn telecommunicators. Both elements of the department provide
24hour police and emergency services to the Dorothea Dix Hospital community,
including the DHHS office complex.
It is the goal of the Public Safety staff to provide high quality services to the
DHHS Campus community. We follow an established community policing program, with a
strong focus on building partnerships with all groups on the campus. Our officers are
approachable and open to questions and service requests at any time. The officers
powers of arrest and investigation are established by the North Carolina General
Statutes 122c, and overseen by the North Carolina Criminal Justice training and
Standards Commission. They are State Police Officers with full subject matter
jurisdiction on DHHS Raleigh Campus property, with the authority and jurisdiction
of a Wake County Sheriff's Deputy to pursue violators off DHHS property or
apprehend eloped clients of a 24hour facility (DDH). If you are charged with a crime
or traffic violation by a Public Safety Officer you will have to answer to the
charges in District Court of Wake County.
Our department is committed to provide the safest environment for our community; we enforce
all traffic laws on campus. We also regulate and enforce parking for the Raleigh Campus.
Parking violation notices are a civil violation that can be appealed to the traffic
committee or paid at the cashier's office in McBryde. We patrol campus, respond to
all PIT Majors, Fire Alarms, and medical emergencies. We respond to all reported
crime, conduct an investigation, collect evidence, prepare a case with input from
Wake County DA's SVU, and serve search and arrest warrants when needed. We respond
to all patient elopements and coordinate apprehension with outside Law Enforcement Agencies.
Our Police Department was founded in 1892, we are proud to continue to provide
services as one of the oldest police departments in Wake County.
