The Parsons Police Department has a rich history dating back to its founding in
1870. Today the agency is a modern operation that serves a resident population of nearly 12,000
citizens, which increases to over 15,000 during the day with an influx of students and business traffic.
The community encompasses and area of nearly 11 square miles and is the largest city in Labette County.
Currently the police department is staffed with 26 officers and 8 support staff (including our Dispatch staff).
The agency responds to over 20,000 calls for service every year. Serving the community requires 24 hour-a-day
staffing, a modern dispatch center and a small jail facility. Currently, the Department has five (5) Divisions
that include: Administration, Patrol, Investigations, Communications and Community/School Resource. Multiple
patrol officers are available on every shift and the agency aggressively pursues criminal investigations with
a well-staffed Detective Unit.
Dispatch monitors weather and sounds the storm sirens in the event of severe weather. The agency also participates
in many community events and provides additional services such as fingerprinting, VIN inspections, citizen academy,
and a speakers bureau (call to request a speaker for your group or club).
Crime prevention, deterrence and displacement are part of proactive policing along with interdicting criminal
behavior and arresting violators. The community is encouraged to take ownership in reporting suspicious activity,
so 'See It, Hear It, Report It!' is a key catch phrase for the Parsons' community. Without community ownership
and involvement (including individuals, schools, business community and neighborhoods), we cannot hope to
'ZERO Out' crime in Parsons.
