The Detroit Lakes Police Department is located in the heart of Lakes Country in west-central
Minnesota. We serve a population of about 8000 people, but that number is often five times higher during
the summer months. We currently employ 15 full-time Officers and 2 civilian personnel.
Our largest division is Patrol, but we also have other Officers assigned to Investigations, School Resources,
and the drug task force. We handle about 10,000 calls for service year and we are one of the few regional
agencies that still offer a full range of community services, from vehicle lockouts and funeral escorts,
to assisting on all fire and medical calls.
As the name implies, the City of Detroit Lakes is built around two large lakes and our primary economy is
tourism. There are also about 400 other lakes and numerous parks all within 30 minutes. You can see why
Minnesota is called the land of 10,000 lakes!
Our webpage contains
lots of information about our department but also has several other useful links about weather and
road conditions, road construction, connections to other agencies, and more.
