Garland, Texas is a diverse urban community of over 235,000 residents, covering 57
square miles in eastern Dallas County. It is located in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. The Police
Department employs over 450 peace officers and civilian personnel. Among the largest departments in
the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, GPD is a progressive agency that stays on the cutting edge of

The Patrol Division, the largest division within the department, is responsible for preventative
crime control and response to citizen calls for service. Specialized units such as S.W.A.T.,
the Canine Unit, and the Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit also operate within Patrol.
In addition to regular patrol, the Department is comprised of additional uniformed support units
to help achieve its mission. These include the Traffic Unit, Gang Unit, Neighborhood Policing Unit,
the School Resource Officers Program, and the Street Level Narcotics Unit.
The Criminal Investigations Division is responsible for investigating and solving criminal
offenses. Garland investigators have a wide choice of assignments, such as Forgery and Fraud,
Burglary and Theft, Domestic Violence, Crimes Against Persons, Narcotics and Intelligence
investigations. The Warrant Unit also operates within this division.
Other interesting assignments may be found in the Staff Services and Support Services Divisions.
The Personnel and Training Unit is responsible for recruiting and training new police recruits,
as well as providing continuous year-round training to all Garland officers. A full-time academy
staff assures that all Garland police officers receive the training they need throughout their
careers. Employment opportunities are also available within the Garland Police Department for
individuals interested in non-enforcement civilian positions. Those positions include 9-1-1 operators,
detention officers, forensics investigators, as well as clerical positions in the Records Unit
and Property Unit, all of which provide a satisfying and challenging occupation.
